Rogers rolls out 3.5G network – now breathing rarified air

For those who haven’t heard yet, Rogers completed a nationwide upgrade before the holidays – effectively doubling their mobile broadband speed to 7.2 mbps downlink.

The new benchmark means their network can be called 3.5G and rank among the fastest globally – and certainly in Canada. For now. Only about 50 carriers globally (out of about 1000) offer 3.5G speeds currently.

In order to take advantage of the new speeds, you’ll have to upgrade your mobile device or rogers stick. Currently only the HTC Touch Diamond, LG Vu are compatible – but expect that roster to grow quickly.

Faster speeds means accessing data over the mobile web or through our applications will be just as fast as doing it from home.

Time will tell if Canadians go crazy for mobile video like the Japanese have – who have had 3.5G for about two years already and can get unlimited data plans for about $40.
