Cuil is cool… but it’s not very social. Or Mobile.

Former Google employees launched a new search engine today called Cuil – pronounced “cool”

Stating that they index three times more sites than Google and ten times more than Microsoft, they believe their entirely new architecture and breakthrough algorithms which focus on the content and not the user is the future of search.

I think the future of search is social… and local – through mobile.

From my perspective, the future of search looks a lot more like Taptu. I posted a video blog / demo of their service here and here back in February of this year.

From a marketer’s perspective, the fact that Cuil also doesn’t track search history or behaviour means it will be difficult to match Yahoo or Google for behavioural ad serving. As of now, there is no “Ad sense” equivalent with the service – but that may change in the future once the investors ask that they monetize their fancy new search engine.

What do you think – are your search needs not being met enough today to drive you to Cuil? What do you want from your search engine?

a wise man once told me (it was you) google is a marketing company that uses a search engine as its tool. I have to agree, i love the google model, and have blogged about ad words. Having spent some time using a friends GPS system last week, i think a mash up of Taptu and Google is the future… maybe an air miles type system, every time you post a comment on a local store you get a point to be used as currency (somewhere?). Social driven ad space, instead of purchased like google is doing now.

I didn’t particularly like Cuil as I couldn’t find what I wanted to find… not so good for a search engine! I like their design though. I will also check out Taptu.

I am not sure whether you speak French but I wrote a review today from a linguist’s point of view… check it out if you have a spare minute

I searched my name and the most relevant results like my blog or my linkedin profile were nowhere to be seen, instead it threw up not-so-relevant results like comments I had posted somewhere and a bookmarking site I used for a week and posting to quit 6 months ago.

Google become a phenomenon because it gave relevant results. I don’t understand why these ex-googlers are missing this simple point by miles?
