Pleased to meet you…

Thanks for burning the bacon with barrett.

I’m a mobile & interactive marketing professional  who has grown up with the world wide “inter-web.” I discovered the web in 1993 when blinking text on a gray background in a Mosaic browser was considered cool and innovative. Back then we used gopher to search and just about every website on the internet was a few links away from an adult related website.

These were pre-Internet Explorer (and Netscape) days when content was static and mostly driven by users and not corporations. In 1993 for example, page hits were just as important as how many web awards and recognition your site had received. Does anybody remember how cool the cool site of the day used to be? I even had my own award for a while…

Recently I redisovered the way back machine and was reminded that although we have come a long way since the early nineties, what is old is new again. Again.  More on that later. One difference of course is that you no longer need to apply for 37 web awards to build traffic and an audience. How novel! How exciting!

Although I’ve traditionally been an early adopter of technology, this is in fact my first blog. I’ve been involved in online communities for years both as an administrator and active participant, but after years of lurking I’m ready to add my own 2.0 voice and provide some insight, perspective and sprinkle of propaganda.

I welcome your recommendations on which sites to search for on the Way Back Machine. I will award the prestigeous “burning the bacon with barrett award” for anybody who can find the origins of this column name!
